Publisher Rocket's competitive-analyzer feature lets you input a search phrase, then shows you the books that currently rank at the top of Amazon's search results for that phrase.

  • ABSR. The book's current Amazon Bestseller Rank (the lower the rank, the more orders of a book).

Category search


Publisher Rocket's category-search feature gives you insights on the books within each Amazon category and sub-category, over 19,000 groupings. The data can be narrowed by book format, ie Kindle, Audible, or physical.

When you list a book on Amazon, you can add it to up to ten categories/sub-categories. Choosing effective ones is important. Your selections help Amazon understand the genre and sub-genre of your book, which helps inform its search results and book-recommendation algorithm.

Book classification also plays a key role in whether your book will end up on an Amazon bestseller list. These lists feature the top 100 bestselling books in a category/sub-category. If your book can make it into the top 100, it'll become visible to Amazon users who're checking out the list for a new book to buy.

Certain bestseller lists are browsed by a lot more users than others. If your book lands on a highly viewed list, a lot of potential buyers will see it. However, lists that are browsed by a lot of people tend to be very competitive to get onto, ie you'd need to sell many books.

Ideally, you'd want to find a balance between classification popularity and competitiveness - what are the most viewed bestseller lists you feel you can realistically get onto?

When making these determinations, be sure to always group your book in categories/sub-categories that are a fit. For example, if you happen to have a sci-fi book, don't classify it as poetry just because you think it'll have an easier time breaking onto a bestseller chart in that area.

AMS ads are paid promotions for books that appear on Amazon. Authors and book marketers can create them via a self-service dashboard. AMS ads consist of a book's cover and some brief ad copy. In recent years, AMS ads have become a major component of many book-marketing strategies.

When creating an AMS ad, you need to specify how you'd like the ad to show up on Amazon. Keyword targeting is a popular option. You provide Amazon with a list of keywords, and when users enter those keywords into the search bar, your ads appear.
