Reader Magnet Tips [Boost Sales]

Want an effective way to increase the size of your author email list? Give out a reader magnet. In this article, learn some key reader magnet tips you can apply to get a lot of readers on your list, ready to buy your books.
Reader magnet tips

1. Think ahead to your book buyers

Reader magnet - sales

A reader magnet is a digital item of value an author gives away for free in exchange for an email address, such as a book or short story.

Even though reader magnets don't bring in sales right away, while creating one, you should think ahead to sales they can lead to. You want to appeal to people who would theoretically be interested in purchasing books from you.

So, whatever genre you write books in, you'll want your reader magnet to appeal to readers of that genre.

You want your subscribers to read your magnet, enjoy it, and then look for more from you.

Authors often give out a free book in the same genre as their paid books. If people like the free book, they may go on to buy one, or more, paid books from that author.

If you don't have a finished book you can give out for free, that's fine. Your reader magnet does not have to be long. But you should make sure it will be appealing to readers of your genre.

2. Automate reader magnet delivery

Reader magnet - delivery

Once you've chosen a concept for a reader magnet, you want to format the file.

Often, these files will be read on Kindles and other e-readers. So, ePub is a format often used, as is PDF.

Vellum is an easy-to-use tool for creating ePubs and Canva is an easy-to-use tool for creating PDFs.

If you don't already have an account on an email-marketing platform, you should create one.

A good email-marketing tool, like MailerLite, can automate the process of people signing up for your email list and receiving your reader magnet.

Once people provide their email address, they should instantly receive a message, pre-written by you, with an access link to the reader magnet.

The access link can be a public Google Drive URL for downloading your file, which won't cost you anything.

3. Create a landing page for your reader magnet

Reader magnet - landing page

Once your reader magnet is formatted, and delivery has been automated inside of your email-marketing platform, you should create a landing page.

This is a web page where readers can learn about your reader magnet and get it by inputting their email address into an online form. At a minimum, the landing page should have these characteristics:

  • An attention-grabbing headline

  • A photo or video related to the reader magnet

  • An emphasis that the item is free

  • A brief mention of what the item is, ex, a book or short story

  • An online form where people can submit their email address to get sent the file, and subscribe to your email list

Leading email-marketing tools, such as MailerLite, have built-in capabilities for landing-page creation.

If your landing page doesn't have a good layout, your conversion rate can be low. So, I suggest you use some kind of a tool that can help you put together a quality page.

Here are a bunch of recommended landing-page tools. Many of them offer email capabilities, or plug directly into tools that do.

4.) Send traffic to your reader magnet landing page

Reader magnet - traffic

Once you have a reader magnet that's ready for automated delivery via a landing page, you want to drive targeted traffic to that page.

A free way to promote your landing page is to add a link to it on the home page of your author website. You can then link to your author site in your social profiles, and mention that people who click the link to visit your site can get something for free.

Though this approach won't cost you anything, it will only be effective if you're getting a good amount of engagement on social media.

Another way to promote your landing page is to run paid ads. Though these will cost money, you can get a lot of traffic fairly quickly, even if you don't have a large social following.

5.) Promote your books to your subscribers

Reader magnet - promotion sequences

Once you start gaining email-list subscribers from your reader magnet, you should set up automated email sequences inside of MailerLite, or whatever email-marketing platform you use, that get subscribers excited about your books.

In these emails, link to retail pages on Amazon, and other sites, where readers can purchase your books.
